Pub trivia is woven into Melbourne's social fabric in a way few other cities can match. It's practically a civic institution, sitting right alongside AFL footy and flat whites. There are 45 active venues scattered from the CBD out to the bayside suburbs, the inner north and the western fringe, and the scene is overwhelmingly independent, with most pubs and hotels running their own quiz nights in-house. Midweek Events works a wider geographic spread: Barton Fink in Thornbury, Brunswick Bowling Club, The Osborne Rooftop in South Yarra and The Kilburn in Hawthorn. Soundstorm Trivia holds a single venue at Melbourne Central Lion Hotel on La Trobe Street. The real character of the city's trivia, though, lives in the 36 independent venues, and nowhere shows it like St Kilda. The beachside suburb has an extraordinary concentration. The Fifth Province, Red Eye Bar, Prince Public Bar, The Back Room, Freddie Wimpoles and The Cross all run their own quiz nights, mostly Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. You could spend an entire week doing trivia within a few blocks of Fitzroy Street. Brunswick and the inner north are just as stacked, with East Brunswick Hotel, Craftsman's Corner, Howler, Retreat Hotel and Flippy's Queer Bar all hosting different nights along the Lygon and Sydney Road corridors. In the CBD, The King Hotel, The Mitre Tavern, Hofbräuhaus, The Coopers Inn and Fortress Melbourne all offer centrally located options. Carlton's Lygon Street precinct brings Green Man's Arms, The Clyde Hotel and Queensberry Hotel into the fold. Tuesday is the biggest night, with roughly 18 venues running, mostly starting between 6:30 and 7:30 PM. Wednesday is a close second at about 15 options. It's almost entirely a weeknight affair. The Local Taphouse in St Kilda East runs a rare Sunday session, and Monday has a small handful, including Fortress Melbourne, Retreat Hotel and Goldy's Tavern in Collingwood.
