Birmingham's trivia splits into two worlds. There are the independent, personality-driven nights in the city's historic neighborhoods, and then there's the Challenge Entertainment circuit that fans out through the southern suburbs. Add them up and you get 24 active venues. That's enough that you could play a different spot every night of the week and never double back. Challenge Entertainment runs eight of those venues, most clustered along the Hoover and Vestavia Hills corridor. Brock's Gap Brewing, Eugene's Hot Chicken at the Galleria, Jefferson's on Southlake Parkway, and a pair of Waldo's Chicken & Beer locations are in the mix. They reach into the city proper too, with Cahaba Brewing Company over in the Avondale-adjacent warehouse district on 5th Avenue South. Trivia Time shows up at the second Waldo's on Pump House Road, which gives that chain the odd distinction of hosting two different trivia companies under one brand. The real character of Birmingham trivia, though, lives in the independent rooms. Mom's Basement in Avondale runs a Monday night that's basically a neighborhood institution at this point. Dave's Pub on 20th Street South goes late on Wednesdays, a 9 PM start for the crowd that thinks 7 o'clock is for amateurs. Otey's Tavern in Mountain Brook starts at 8. The brewery circuit is strong as well. Back Forty Beer Company in the 1st Avenue North warehouse row and The Grocery Brewpub on Central Avenue both host Thursday nights. Monday Night Brewing's Social Club on 12th Street South brings an Atlanta-born brand to Birmingham's growing Parkside district. Tuesdays are the most competitive night, six venues running at once, and Wednesdays aren't far behind with seven options stretching from downtown out to the suburbs.
